Senegal’s Navy outlines fleet procurement plan, ahead of AMSF 2020

Senegal has outlined an ambitious fleet recapitalization plan as a result of increased maritime security challenges across Africa.

Since Senegal will begin oil exploitation by 2022 and is anticipating a significant rise in illegal maritime activity once the drilling begins. In order to be prepared for these evolving threats, the Senegal Navy is currently shortlisting suppliers for OPVs, patrol crafts, and logistic support ships and advanced equipment.

This procurement and acquisition plan will be showcased to the international public during the Africa Maritime Security Forum (AMSF 2020) to be held between 20th – 22nd January, 2020 in Dakar, Senegal.

The AMSF 2020 will be the first high-calibre event in Senegal to feature 8 Chiefs of Naval Staff and global maritime decision makers to address the security infrastructure supporting West Africa’s boom in LNG production.

The African Maritime Security Forum 2020 is slated to coincide with Senegal Navy’s 45th birthday celebrations, the event will reveal Senegal’s impressive naval base and fleet capabilities to the international community as well as their commitment to international navy cooperation.

In addition, the AMSF 2020 in Dakar will provide a platform for African Navies to tackle the ongoing challenge of offshore oil theft, illegal fishing, illegal migration, trafficking and piracy.

Regarding the 62 metres OPV 58 S Offshore Patrol Vessel, Senegal placed an order for three 62 meters Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPV) from French shipbuilder PIRIOU.

The contract was signed on November 17, with construction to start in early 2020 while their delivery is set to take place by mid-2023.

The vessels which are the OPV 58 S, a missile armed patrol vessel dedicated to surveillance, identification and intervention missions.

Included in the contract is a follow on support which will be conducted at PIRIOU NGOM site in Senegal.
